Banking on Blockchain: Part 3
HSBC's Milestone & The Future of Debt

Tokenised debt issuance has moved from experiment to reference point. What was previously discussed as a technical possibility is now something issuers, investors and market infrastructure providers must have a position on.
The significance is less about the technology and more about the operating model. Tokenised issuance compresses the number of intermediaries, shortens settlement and changes how records are maintained across the lifecycle of an instrument.
For issuers, the questions are practical: which instruments are suited to tokenised issuance, what does it change about investor access, and what internal capability is required to support it.
For market infrastructure providers, the question is about positioning. Tokenised issuance does not remove the need for infrastructure — it changes what that infrastructure has to do.
Our view is that institutions should treat this as a capability question before it becomes a competitive one. The organisations that understand the operating implications early will be better placed when volume follows.
